This week we visited the exhibition Refrect, Refect, Project: Light Works from the Collection at the Hirshhorn Museum and viewed works by artists who use or reference light in their art work. After viewing the exhibition on our own, we came back together and discussed some of our favorite pieces and what we thought about them.
This experience inspired many new ideas for final projects.

Piero and Breck started the first class off with a discussion of the words "Refract, Reflect, Project," which is the title of the latest special exhibition at the Hirshhorn Museum. After sharing our thoughts on the meaning of these words, each person had 20 minutes to create three art works - one piece to represent each of the three words.
When we completed our pieces, the class was introduced to the "Critical Response Process" which we used as a guide for discussing each other's work. These quick, sculptural "sketches" got us thinking about how we might approach the design and execution of our final piece, which we will complete at the end of the five-week workshop.
These are two examples of the work students created and discussed in the first class:
Please check back for information on the next session of ArtLab for Teens, coming Summer 2007.
The Hirshhorn invites aspiring young artists to transform the Museum's ArtLab into a working studio space. This intensive, five-week program gives talented high school students the opportunity to engage with peers, artists, and curators and to respond to objects from the collection featured in Refract, Reflect, Project by creating original works of art.
Students are invited to apply from local schools, grades 9 through 12. No previous art experience is necessary, and all materials are provided by the Hirshhorn.
